Choosing the right martial arts school for your child

December 01, 20235 min read

You are thinking about enrolling your child into martial arts, but how do you choose the best martial arts school and style for your child?

Should they learn Karate, Taekwondo or Jiu Jitsu? These are all serious questions every parent has to ask when thinking about enrolling their child into a martial arts school.

Learning a martial art is not simply about self-defence techniques, it can provide an array of other positive attributes to your child’s life such as developing coordination, confidence, focus, discipline and respect as well as being a great way to increase their fitness levels.

So, you want to do your research and understand what each martial arts school has to offer, the qualifications of their instructors and what their specialties are.

Zone Martial Arts

Who is Zone Martial Arts?

Zone Martial Arts is a fun, family friendly martial arts school located in Miranda, in the Sutherland Shire.

At Zone Martial Arts, we believe self-defence is important for everyone to learn, regardless of age, fitness level or gender. We teach a number of different martial arts styles, all focused on building confidence, self-discipline and fitness to aid in any self-defence situation.

We have options available for any parent interested in introducing their child to martial arts and our full-time school is completely equipped to teach martial arts in a safe and fun environment, with highly qualified instructors.

What martial arts does Zone Martial Arts offer?

Zone Martial Arts offers a few avenues to learning martial arts. You can choose a Self Defence stream, a swords stream or just learn martial arts at your own pace in our All Styles classes

Hosinsool (Self Defence)

Learning practical self-defence techniques is a vital skill not only to defend yourself if you require it, but also to improve confidence and self-belief.

Hosinsool is a self defence system utilising techniques from Taekwondo and Taekyun and delivers a fully functional and end to end self defence program.

Students will develop essential qualities of self-control, will power and determination alongside humility, loyalty, and respect, while also improving fitness, flexibility and coordination.

Taekwondo (also known as Tae Kwon Do) is the art of self-defense that originating from Korea and is recognised as one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, dating back more than 2,000 years.

Taekwondo is a martial art not just for fighting or self-defence, but one that aims to develop essential qualities of self-control, will power and determination.

Taekyun (also known as Taekgyeon, Taekkyeon or Taekkyon)

Taekyun is a very old and traditional Korean martial art, its history dates back to the 1700s during the mid-Joseon Dynasty, where it was practiced as a competitive sport. It's believed that Taekyun evolved out of an even older, but now lost, extinct combat art called Subak.
This traditional Korean martial art uses fluid, rhythmic dance-like movements to strike or trip up an opponent. The graceful movements of a well-trained Taekyun student are gentle and circular rather than straight and rigid but can explode with enormous flexibility and strength.

Haidong Gumdo

Haidong Gumdo is an elegant and powerful ancient Korean sword martial art that is more physically demanding than it looks.

It builds great physical, mental and emotional strength. It draws from battlefield tactics and techniques to build a curriculum for mental, physical and spiritual development.

Students learn forms, step drills, sitting and moving meditation, sparring as well as bamboo, paper and straw cutting. Unlike Kendo and its Korean equivalent, Kumdo, the focus in Haidong Gumdo is not duelling but on the tactics of outdoor, pitched battles.

Krav Maga

Krav Maga focuses on practical and efficient techniques designed to neutralise threats quickly. It emphasises instinctive movements, practical solutions and situational awareness.

This practical, real-world martial arts approach, empowers you with confidence, sharpens your decision-making, and enhances your physical fitness.
Krav Maga has gained worldwide recognition, attracting anyone seeking to enhance their physical fitness, mental fortitude and personal safety.

This style is available for teens aged 14 and up.
